Clashes in Douala Leave Four Dead

(MENAFN) In Douala, Cameroon, at least four individuals have been killed in violent confrontations between opposition supporters and security forces just before the official release of the country’s presidential election results, according to the regional governor.

The unrest began last week following the publication of partial election results by local media outlets.

A journal reported that President Paul Biya, aged 92, is leading the race with 53.66% of the vote, while his main rival Issa Tchiroma Bakary has secured 35.1%.

Cabral Libii and Bello Bouba Maigari have garnered 3.41% and 2.45% of the vote, respectively.

On Sunday, supporters of opposition candidate Tchiroma took to the streets of Douala, which is the commercial hub of the nation.

They blocked roads, set tyres on fire, and clashed with security forces, anticipating the formal declaration of the election results, which were expected on Monday.

Regional governor Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua reported that demonstrators had attacked police stations in two districts of Douala during the protests, leading to the tragic deaths of four individuals.

Additionally, several members of the security forces sustained injuries.

The country’s Constitutional Council is set to confirm the election results, which many expect to grant Biya another term, extending his nearly 50-year rule.

The election has sparked significant controversy as Biya, who has been in power for 43 years, seeks an eighth term in office.

At 92, he is among the world’s oldest leaders and is Africa's second-longest serving head of state, following Equatorial Guinea's Teodoro Obiang Nguema.

Biya has been the second president of Cameroon since the country gained independence from France in 1960.
